Georgian Bars Back on Trend

If you have been searching Pinterest for bi-folding doors and windows, chances are you will have seen the criss-cross pattern associated with Georgian – or Astragal – bars, as they are currently enjoying another round of popularity. In fact, once you know about Georgian bar windows, you’ll start seeing them everywhere – in the apartments on your morning commute, on your neighbours’ semi detached and in the period homes around the corner: such is their versatile nature.

How do we do it?

Created by strategically placing dividing bars across panes of glass, it’s a style which first came about in the Georgian period and is currently enjoying a renaissance due to its ability to complement a classical, modern or commercial look, while completely transforming a space – if you have a minimalist look, the slim grids can give your home a modern industrial edge; if a classic style is more you, Georgian bars can take this look to the next level, while also adding to a sense of homeliness and comfort.

The bars tend to be made of the same material as the frames and are installed on top of the panes of glass. They give windows and doors an extra feeling of depth and privacy, and of course, offer a completely different look. The bars are placed either horizontally, for more of a modern hip, London look; diagonally to create a more classic repeated diamond shape; or both horizontally and vertically for a traditional grid effect. It’s also possible to have the bars placed vertically, though it’s not used as commonly.

Achieve the perfect look for your home

It’s more traditional for Georgian bars to be found on a casement or fixed frame window than a door, but we’re now seeing a growing trend for them to be featured on bi-fold doors, as the style complements the slim profile frames to give an extra feeling of snugness while still allowing people to enjoy vast expanses of light.

Georgian bars are available as an additional option on our windows and doors, and you’re able to specify the format as to how you would want them (either horizontally, vertically or both). This is really beneficial if you have a certain look you’re going for, especially if your home has benefited from the Georgian bar design in the past or if you’re in a conservation area and there’s a requirement to keep the property’s existing style. There’s no doubt that the style of the windows would have originally been a huge attraction of the property, as they add such a sense of character. It can also be a comfort to be able to rejuvenate a traditional style home with new windows which offer the same appearance along with a longer life span and the added benefits of thermal efficiency and security – something that would have been missing in the old style!

Of course, by taking a traditional idea and adding it to the slimmer sightlines we see today, Georgian bars allow windows and doors to be as versatile as your style in terms of decorative features, adding another dimension of personalisation to your home.
