1. What is a bi-fold door threshold?

A bi-fold door threshold is the track along which the carriage slides to open and close the door. The bottom of the door fits into the top and bottom threshold. Read our complete guide to bifold doors to find out more about the different features of patio doors.

2. What threshold options are available for the doors?

Origin offers three types of bifold door threshold options:

  • Non-weathered threshold. This option can create the opportunity to install the threshold into the flooring to create a flush floor level.
  • Weathered threshold. A weathered threshold is also known as a ‘rebated’ threshold and features a small lip on one edge of the track. The seal on the bottom of the bi-fold door compresses against the lip to create a weather tight seal.
  • Mobility threshold. A mobility threshold is available on both Single and French doors, for ease of access.

3. What are the features of a weathered threshold?

Weathered thresholds are designed to give greater protection against driving rain and draughts.

Though rebated, the track can be sunk so that the upstand is just 14mm from outside to in. You can see a drawing of the measurements of a weathered threshold here. Many people who originally want a completely level threshold, opt instead for a weathered threshold to give them piece of mind that their home will be protected from the elements.

Due to the superior weather performance, this is a perfect option if the doors open out to an external environment, such as a garden or patio.

4. What are the features of a non-weathered threshold?

Non-weathered thresholds offer a completely flat transition between the inside and out. As there is no raised section, this type of threshold is especially good for:

  • Older people
  • Toddlers
  • Those with mobility issues

However, because the door seal doesn’t have solid lip to compress against, optimal weather performance cannot be guaranteed. This type of track is ideal for internal use or a sheltered outside area.

You can see a drawing of our non-weathered threshold here.

5. Why do you need drainage with bi-fold doors?

Drainage is used to channel rainwater away from the threshold of external bi-fold doors. This stops water pooling in the track and routes it through the correct channel away from the building.

6. What drainage is required for bi-fold doors?

There are two types of drainage methods that can be used on our external bi-folds. These apply to both weathered and non-weathered thresholds. They are:

Diagram showing how face drainage works for Origin bifold doors.

Face drainage. Water enters the lower chamber of the track and exits via a capped hole in the outer face. It is common place to then put an Aco drain in front of the door track which will route the water to a drain.

Diagram showing how Concealed drainage works for Origin bifold doors.

Concealed drainage. Water exits the bottom track through the polyamide break barrier and enters the top of the cill. From there, it travels through the front section of the cill and out of the very front edge underneath.

How rain water and surface water drains away from any part of your property is a site-specific requirement and should be reviewed by a qualified person.

7. Do bi-fold doors leak?

A rebated threshold will ensure that your bi-fold doors don’t leak. The lip of the rebated threshold creates a seal against the door, preventing water from getting in.

Water tightness tests are measured in Pascals, which is a measure of pressure.

In these tests, the Origin Bi-fold Doors have performed exceptionally, withstanding pressure of up to 600 Pascals. This means our doors are designed to withstand the UK’s harshest wet weather conditions.

8. What is a bi-fold door threshold connector?

This is a small piece of material used to connect two sections of threshold. These are used if you are extending the size of your bi-fold door. Any adjustments to the size of your bi-fold door should be discussed with a professional fitter.

9. Fixing a bi-fold door track problems

If your track becomes damaged you might be able to make some minor adjustments yourself, or you may be required to call in a professional.

The following are possible problems that may arise with bi-fold door tracks, and their solutions:

  • Dirt in the track. This can be simply fixed by running a cloth along the track. It is unusual for this type of issue to impair movement.
  • Debris lodged in the track. Carefully feel along the inside of the track and remove any debris that you find.
  • The track has been damaged. In the event that the track has been substantially damage, it is recommended that you call a professional to assess the situation. It may be possible to remove the track and fix the problem. Another option would be to simply replace the damaged track.

We strongly recommend that in the event of major damage to the track, you do not attempt to fix the problem yourself. This could lead to further damage, both to the damaged track and to the upper track and door itself.

10. How to get a bi-fold door back on track
