Is there a standard range of sizes for front doors?
Generally, front doors are made in a range of ‘industry-standard’ sizes, which most door manufacturers and suppliers will be able to provide.
The table below shows a standard range of sizes for front doors. But do bear in mind that with Origin’s Front Door, you aren’t confined to these sizes—we can make a door in whatever size you need!

What’s the standard height of a front door?
The standard height of a single front door is usually between 2,032mm (6 ft 6 in)—the most common front door height in the UK—and 2,438mm (8 ft).
Origin can make doors as tall as 2,700mm (8 ft 10 in).
What’s the standard width of a front door?
The standard—and the most common—width of a single front door is 762mm, though they can range from a narrow 400 mm (1 ft 3 in) to a very wide 1,524mm (5 ft).
Origin’s Front Door is available in widths ranging from 325mm to 1,200mm (3 ft 11 in).
What’s the standard thickness of a front door?
Front doors are usually 35mm (13⁄8 in) to 55mm (23⁄16 in) thick.
When would I need double front doors or an oversized front door?
If you have an entryway wider than 900mm (roughly 3 ft), you might consider installing double doors, or Origin’s French doors, which can be made to a maximum width of 2,500mm (8 ft 2 in).
Another option to fill large apertures is a single door with glazed sidepanels.
Can a front door be made to measure?
Of course, and many are. Not all homes throughout the UK have the same-sized doors and doorways and so it’s typical for people to request a custom-sized front door.
All Origin Front Doors are completely bespoke, tailored to your exact requirements not just in size but also colour, finish and additional accessories such as handles and letterboxes.
Are there building regulations that determine what front door sizes are allowed?
Credit: NHBC
UK building regulations say that the main entranceway to a dwelling should have a clear width—the distance between the doorstop and the face of the open door—of at least 775mm (2 ft 6½ in). They don’t specify a size for the door leaf/panel itself, so as long as your door meets or exceeds the restriction, it can be any size.
Do building regulations insist on a particular height for front door thresholds?
Yes. The regulations specify the need for front doors to have an ‘accessible threshold’—that is, a threshold with a height of no more than 15mm (9⁄16 in).
Do front doors open inward or outward?
There are no regulations to say front doors must open inward or outward, and with Origin’s Front Door, you have the choice of both.
When making the decision, you need to consider how much inside space you have to accommodate an in-swinging door.
