What colours express and when to use them

Yellow front doors

Conveying happiness and warmth, yellow can be fun and make your home much more inviting from the outside. We find this looks great against more neutral colours, by adding a pop of vibrancy to your property.

Orange front doors

Similar to yellow, an orange front door is a statement. If your property features a lot of neutral materials and colours, a pop of orange on the front door can act as the perfect eye-catching twist to elevate your home.

Earthenware oranges like terracotta can be warm and cheerful while blending with other naturally occurring colours in the landscape.

Red front doors

We associate red with strength, passion and energy. It comes in many shades, from fiery orange-reds to rich, classic burgundies.

Bright reds have been a popular front door colour for a long time because they pair well with many other colours. However, if bright red is too strong for the look you want - a deeper, more refined crimson would be the way to go.

Green front doors

A green front door inspired by the surrounding landscape can make a lasting impression.

If your home is made of red brick, a green front door can provide an appealing contrast, and can help you to stand out from the crowd.

Blue front doors

Lighter blues can be a positive and subtle way to brighten up a home. Using a vibrant blue, however, means it may be more effective to keep the rest of the house understated and neutral. Darker, almost-grey blues fit any architectural style and can accentuate tones used in a lot of different types of stone.

Purple front doors

A purple front door can give a home an eye-catching, contemporary feel.

Purple interiors can feel gloomy and dark if the rooms don’t have a lot of natural light streaming in. Outside, however, on the front of a house this isn’t a problem and can in fact make the perfect contrasting statement to the rest of your home.

Black front doors

Extremely versatile, black works well with every other colour. This classic colour can represent simplicity, sophistication and provides a smart appearance. In particular, a black front door can be a great match for a house made from red brick.

One of Origin’s most popular front door colours, grey is perfect if you want to give your home an understated elegance. Recent trends have seen flat shades of grey paired with brighter colours such as turquoise for a retro, vintage feel.

How to choose the best colour for your front door

When it comes to design, we don’t all have the same tastes, and one person’s playful flourish might be another person’s eyesore. It is therefore vital to consider your own aesthetic preferences, as well as the look of your home.

You should base your decision on the following factors:

Choosing a colour by building material

Most houses in the UK are made of stone or brick, but the natural hue of these materials can vary significantly. Alternatively, it might be that you’ve painted over the stone or brick in a different colour altogether.

If your house is built from neutral-coloured stone, you have a wealth of options, as any colour of front door can look impressive next to the shades of beige and light brown. Matching a door to brickwork, however, can be a little trickier.

A light-coloured door surrounded by pale bricks can struggle to stand out, while bold colours paired with dark bricks may create a bold look.

Before you decide, it’s always worth using paint swatches to compare the colour of the walls with your favoured door colour.

Choosing a colour by architecture

Georgian, Victorian, 1930s semis, terraces—housing in the UK can, architecturally, be very different. But how does the style of your home influence your choice of front door colour? For example, for period homes, doors in a rich blue or red can provide elegance.

Choosing a colour by landscape and surroundings

If you live in the countryside or among swathes of greenery, use it to your advantage! Neutral and earthy colours or shades of green (from subtle sage to bright lime) can really blend with the surrounding landscape while boosting your home’s aesthetic impact.

Consider the colour of your existing doors and windows

Although you want your home to make a statement – it is still important to consider whether your front door colour matches your other doors, such as your patio door. This can help to create a more consistent appearance and style. If, on the other hand, you want a bolder style, you may want to pair a bright-coloured door with other more neutral, understated doors.

Your own unique style preferences

Perhaps a vibrant yellow, red, turquoise or purple—these colours are capable of brightening up any miserable British day and are all available in Origin’s range of front doors.

Some people prefer the understated approach. If that’s more to your liking, a grey, black or green can provide the sophistication you’re seeking.

Should you choose a dual colour option?

With Origin Front Doors, you also have the option of a dual-colour option where the outside of the door matches the exterior of the home while the inside complements the interior décor. This is an ideal option if you are indecisive between two colours or would enjoy a slightly different style on the inside of the home to the outside.

A popular dual colour option is 9910G in/ 7016M out.

At Origin, our aluminium is coated with the highest-grade powder available. Applied using an electrostatic process after a special pre-treatment, it is then cured at 200°C to form a robust coating that is tougher than conventional paint, whilst maintaining a completely smooth finish.

The finish is extremely hardwearing, making the frame:

  • Resistant to scratches

  • Unlikely to experience colour fading.

This level of quality ensures optimum longevity and is just one reason why many of our doors come with up to a 20-year guarantee depending on location.

What are RAL colours and what does RAL stand for?

RAL is a colour matching system that was founded in Europe. The purpose behind the RAL system is to expound and standardise colours for coatings, paint and plastics. The RAL colour-matching system is overseen by the RAL Deutsches Institut für Güte¬sicherung und Kennzeichnung.

RAL stands for 'Reichs-Ausschuß für Lieferbedingungen und Gütesicherung' and is German for ‘National Commission for Delivery Terms and Quality Assurance’. The first RAL colours charts (RAL Classic) was compiled by the RAL organisation back in 1927 and included 40 colours. Find out more about RAL colours here.
