What are corner bifold doors?

Installing corner bifolds means removing one complete wall or window and an adjacent wall and putting in two door sets at 90º or 135º angles to each other. When folded back, they open up an entire corner of your property. They can be configured with or without a corner post as support.

Would a homeowner need to employ a structural engineer to have bifolding aluminium corner doors installed?

Hiring the services of a structural engineer is imperative if you plan to have a corner set of bi-fold doors installed. A structural engineer will survey your home to ensure that it is structurally sound, and suitable for corner bifolds. It’s also worth hiring a builder with experience in cantilevered steel work for the project.

Patio doors and small bifolding door sets don’t usually require a structural engineer if the doors being fitted are less than the width of the existing door or window they are replacing. This is because the existing lintel from the window will support the aperture. Find out more about the benefits of aluminium bifold doors here.

What roof support is required for a corner bifold door set to be installed?

Cantilevered steelwork engineered to hold the roof weight will need to be installed above the doors. This will also support the lateral weight of the door. Installing cantilevered steelwork around the aperture means that no supporting posts will be on display, so you can enjoy an uninterrupted view when the doors are open.

How much do corner aluminium bifold doors cost?

The cost of the actual bi-fold doors set remains the same whether they are installed on a flat wall or fitted around a corner. The corner configuration, however, will require an additional corner post, which will increase the overall cost slightly. Additionally, it is worth considering that a corner configuration may be more time consuming to install, potentially resulting in increased costs for building work and labour.

Are corner bifolding doors available with and without a corner post? Can I achieve a “moving corner” effect?

Corner configurations are available with a moving or fixed corner post. The moving corner post feels like not having a corner post at all because when the doors are folded back the corner moves with them, leaving a completely open space. To achieve a fully unobstructed view, the building and the doors must be fully supported. Watch the video above to see this effect.

Some applications may have a support post in the corner outside the line of the doors, depending on the engineered steel work design put in from the builder or structural engineer. In this instance, the post would always be visible whether the doors are open or closed.

You can read a case study about a home in which corner bi-folds with a fixed post were installed and another case study on a home in which corner doors were fitted with a moving post. In both case studies, the doors were fitted so the homeowners could create a spacious third living area and enjoy extensive views of their beautiful gardens.

Frequently asked questions

Are aluminium corner bifolds energy efficient?

Modern aluminium doors are fitted with a thermal break, which resists thermal transfer from one side of the door to the other.

The polyamide thermal break is a less conductive material than aluminium, so it creates a barrier that separates the aluminium frame into two pieces. This reduces the flow of thermal energy through the aluminium, which means more heat is retained inside the home.

Aluminium carries the benefit that bi-fold doors can be fitted with triple glazing.

How do you maintain new aluminium bi-fold doors?

Aluminium bi-fold doors require barely any maintenance and need only occasionally cleaning. Simply wipe down the frame and glass of each panel with soapy water and a non-abrasive cloth to keep your doors looking as good as new.

It’s also recommended that you brush away loose debris from the tracks, as this can prevent the doors from having a smooth operation.

Are corner aluminium bifold doors strong?

Aluminium bi-fold doors are among the strongest doors on the market. Just the fact that they’re made from metal gives them an advantage over doors in uPVC or timber, but aluminium is especially strong because of how it’s blended with high-strength alloys during manufacturing.

As the frames are able to support larger, heavier panes of glass, they can be made slimmer, to provide more expansive views onto gardens, patios or other outdoor spaces. Not only that, but they’re better able to resist the wear and tear of frequent use, and withstand inclement weather.

Do corner bifold doors offer good security?

The best-quality bifolds are equipped with certain features that make them safe to operate while keeping the home fully secure. These include:

  • a multi-point locking system

  • a kitemarked security lock

  • secure hinges

  • heavy-duty handles

  • toughened glass.
