Tilt and turn windows are often chosen for their practicality They can tilt inward from the top for secure, controlled ventilation, or can open fully inward for easy cleaning and maximum airflow. When investing in a renovation or new-build project, you will likely be looking for high-performance windows that deliver on a security front, are aesthetically pleasing and that offer optimal thermal efficiency for a warmer, quieter and more sustainable home.

Energy efficiency depends less on the window style itself and more on the complete specification: frame design, airtightness, thermal breaks, glazing choice and installation quality. This article covers everything you need to consider about thermal performance and glazing when choosing tilt and turn windows.

Are tilt and turn windows energy efficient?

Tilt and turn windows can be exceptionally energy efficient because the inward-opening mechanism allows the sash to compress tightly against the frame. With multiple locking points around the perimeter, a well-designed system creates a strong seal that helps reduce draughts, air leakage and heat loss.

Better thermal performance helps create more consistent indoor environment. It can also support lower energy consumption, which will be felt especially in homes where they are replacing older, draughty windows.

What makes a window thermally efficient?

The most important measure to understand is U-Value. The lower the U-Value, the better the window is at limiting heat transfer. However, the overall thermal performance depends on airtightness, the quality of the seals, the frame material and the type of glass specified.

Origin’s OW80 system is manufactured with a thermally broken aluminium frame. When the system is specified with triple-glazing, the OW80 Tilt and Turn Window can achieve a U-Value as low as 0.83 W/m²K, making it one of the highest-performing options without compromising on design.

Double or triple-glazing: which is best?

Double-glazing offers a meaningful improvement over single glazing. It helps reduce heat loss and can provide a good balance of cost, comfort and performance. For standard renovations where maximum specification is not essential, high-quality double-glazing in a well-sealed frame may be sufficient for your needs.

Triple-glazing further reduces heat loss by adding a third pane of glass. It can improve thermal performance, prevent windows feeling cold-to-the touch and contribute to a quieter home. It is usually the better choice for homeowners aiming for the highest level of indoor comfort and efficiency.

While it's a bigger investment, triple-glazing allows the system to reach its full performance potential while preserving the refined, architectural look that makes aluminium so desirable.

What about Low-E glass and specialist glazing?

Low-E glass has a microscopically thin coating that helps reflect heat back into the room while still allowing natural light through.

The OW80 can accommodate a range of glazing unit thicknesses, including 28mm, 32mm and 44mm options, giving homeowners and installers flexibility when specifying double or triple-glazing. Depending on the installer and project requirements, this can also open up practical choices such as acoustic glass for noise reduction, laminated or security glass.

Can tilt and turn windows help meet Passivhaus standards?

Passivhaus projects demand very low heat loss, excellent airtightness. Tilt and turn windows are well suited to these ambitions because their tight compression seal can support strong airtightness when paired with high-quality frames, glazing and installation. With triple-glazing, the OW80 Tilt and Turn Window is therefore an attractive choice for eco-conscious homeowners.

The benefit of weatherproof ventilation

While the windows offer a tight weatherproof seal, when you want to ventilate the room, you don't want rain entering your home or wind to slam the window shut. This is where tilt and turn styles are a practical choice. They open inwards and in tilt mode, rain naturally flows away from the home.[

Why trust Origin's Premium OW80 system for your home?

Origin’s OW80 Tilt and Turn Window is the high-performance choice. It combines the clean, sophisticated appearance of aluminium frames while offering a high level of thermal efficiency, security and design flexibility.
