Origin Doors

Energy efficient windows are designed to improve the thermal efficiency of a home by limiting the amount of heat lost through windows and reducing draughts. They can reduce the cost of energy bills by minimising the need for heating the home. Energy efficient windows should also help keep the home cool in warmer weather.

Effectiveness of energy efficient windows – C is the worst A++ is the best

The effectiveness of energy efficient windows will depend on their energy rating. Windows are rated from A++ to G, with G being the least efficient. All new windows are required to be at least C rated by building regulations, so if you are looking to upgrade your windows, you won’t be able to choose any lower than a C rating. According to Which? fitting a B rated window instead of a C rated window saves around 6.5% on energy bills.

Only the most thermally efficient window will achieve an A++ energy rating and the Origin Window, when upgraded with Aerogel, does just this. Aerogel can increase the insulation of windows up to 67% and Origin is the only company in the UK to offer windows with this super-insulating technology.

Advantages of energy efficient glazing

  • Energy savings – Fitting thermally efficient windows stops heat escaping and as a result you won’t need to use as much energy to heat your home.
  • Cost savings – Using the heating less will mean you can save money on your energy bills.
  • Reduces draughts – Properly insulated windows can eliminate draughts.
  • Reduces heat in warm weather – Energy efficient glazing can keep temperatures cooler in warmer weather by reducing the amount of heat coming into the home from the windows.

Common questions on buying energy efficient windows

Where to buy energy efficient windows?

There is a huge range of windows available. Before making a decision, it’s best to speak to a trusted advisor who will discuss the best options for your home and budget. You can contact your local installer to find out more about the casement, bay and gable windows we manufacture.

Origin have national accredited partners and you can find your local partner at https://origin-global.com/visit-your-local-showroom

How much do energy efficient windows cost?

This will depend on the type of window you choose. Triple glazing is more expensive than double glazing but does have a higher level of energy efficiency. Aluminium windows frames fitted with a thermal break and windows made from timber generally have better thermal properties than uPVC but they are more expensive.

The style of window will also have an impact on price. Bespoke windows, such as those manufactured by Origin, are going to be more expensive than ‘off the shelf’ units but having windows custom made gives you the advantage of getting exactly what you want in terms of style and energy efficiency.

To get an accurate idea of cost, speak to a number of window manufacturers and suppliers to discuss your requirements and get accurate quotes.

Who makes the most energy efficient windows?

Origin are one of the only window manufacturers in the UK that offer windows with an A++ rating, the highest energy rating available. When upgraded with Aerogel technology, the Origin Window achieves an A++ energy rating, the highest energy efficiency possible for windows.

Do energy efficient windows increase a home’s value?

Fitting improved windows, such as adding double glazing or upgrading to triple glazing can increase the value of your property, by 10% according to some experts. If your windows look tired or have any operational problems such as sticking or squeaking you can also add value by updating them.

New windows can also increase  saleability, especially as all homes now need to have an Energy Performance Certificate. This certificate provides details on the energy performance of the property, as well as making suggestions for improvements.

If your windows are particularly old and showing lots of signs of wear and tear then it may be worth replacing them as they could put buyers off.

How much money will energy efficient windows save?

According to the Energy Saving Trust, a detached house with A rated windows will save around £120 - £160 a year. You can find out more about how much money upgrading your glazing will save with this handy costs and savings table on the Energy Saving Trust website.

Can I claim tax back on energy efficient windows?

Secondary and double glazing units don’t qualify for the reduced rate of 5% VAT that some energy-saving products do. You can find out more on gov.uk.

Can I get a grant for energy efficient windows?

The best way to find out if your home is eligible for a grant for new windows is to use the energy grants calendar on gov.uk.

Ratings

How energy efficient are aluminium windows?

In the past, windows with aluminium frames have been regarded as having poor energy efficiency. This is because aluminium easily conducts heat. However, modern aluminium windows use thermal break technology which provides a barrier between the inside and the outside of the frame, and therefore prevents heat from being easily transferred.

All of Origin’s aluminium windows are fitted with thermal break barriers. These barriers prevent thermal transfer from the outside of the window frame to the living area inside. They work by separating the aluminium frame into interior and exterior sections and joining these sections with a less conductive material. This helps the Origin Window achieve an A+ rating.

The thermal efficiency of the Origin Window can be enhanced further when upgraded with Aerogel technology, as this enables the windows to achieve an A++ energy rating.

How are energy efficient windows rated?

Windows are rated from A++ to G, with G being the lowest rating. To achieve a rating, windows are assessed according to the following:

  • How draughty they are and how much air can leak through the frames.
  • How much sunlight can penetrate the glazing.
  • How much heat they prevent from passing through the window.

The better they perform, the higher their energy rating.

The current U-Value regulations as of June 2022 are 1.4W/(m²K) when you are replacing existing doors and 1.6 W/(m²K) for new builds or extensions. Origin’s aluminium windows with triple glazed units and Aerogel can achieve industry leading U-Values of 0.8 W/(m²K), far exceeding the level of 1.4 set by the Government, helping to keep your home at the optimum temperature year-round.
