Aluminium bifold doors offer a reliable, durable option for your home. Allowing you to utilise natural light without compromising on style – they make a sleek, modern addition to any property.
Here, we answer common queries on aluminium quality and how to tell the differentiate between the varying qualities of aluminium.
In this guide:
Why is aluminium the best material for bifold doors?
The powder coated aluminium used in Origin Bifold Doors is corrosion resistant, meaning it can offer a much longer lifespan and guarantee than other materials. Aluminium is also a very strong and durable material, meaning that less material is required to support the glass so that you can enjoy greater views. A huge reason why many homeowners opt for aluminium bifolds is due to aluminium being one of the most environmentally friendly materials available for bifold doors and can be easily recycled.
Finally, aluminium requires much less maintenance than materials such as timber, making it a great option if you are looking for a convenient, low-maintenance option.

How is the smooth finish achieved on the aluminium?
Origin’s aluminium manufacturers polish the die used to cast the frames after each extrusion run to reduce the chance of corrosion and to avoid contamination on the surface of the profile, giving a high-quality finish ready for the powder coating process. How can I differentiate between the varying qualities of aluminium?
The proof of premium quality aluminium is in the surface finish. Good quality aluminium should have a perfectly smooth and consistent finish, while poor quality may have pitting from when the door has been heated during powder coating. All of Origin’s frames have a completely smooth surface with a uniform powder coated finish.
In addition to this, we have invested in buffer stock to ensure the sourcing of aluminium does not affect our continued record for upholding this promise.
Can aluminium frames be recycled?
Yes, aluminium can be recycled infinitely, making it an environmentally friendly choice for construction products, especially when compared to materials such as UPVC. Given the strength and durability of aluminium, an Origin door or window is built for longevity and endurance, so won’t need to be replaced or recycled for many decades to come.
How readily available is raw aluminium?
Aluminium is the third most abundant resource on the planet in its raw form and in fact the earth’s crust is comprised of around 8% aluminium.
How much energy is used when recycling aluminium?
There is no limit as to how many times aluminium can be recycled, so everything from aluminium drinks cans to door frames can be melted down and repeatedly made into new products. Recycling aluminium uses just 5% of the energy used in primary production and aluminium is the most cost-effective metal to recycle.

Origin’s aluminium bifold doors
How can Origin guarantee the ‘Your Lead Time, Not Ours’ promise when you’re relying on your aluminium supplier?
Origin have made a significant investment in all areas of our manufacturing and procurement. Through employing world class personnel and sourcing innovative and exceptionally efficient machinery, we have managed to significantly reduce the time it takes to manufacture a door set or window.
What makes the aluminium used in Origin Bi-fold Doors and Windows such good quality?
The quality of the aluminium used in a bi-folding door or window system can vary from system to system. What makes Origin’s aluminium system different is the way the profile is made.
Extruding our profile is done by heating the metal, a cylindrical billet of aluminium, which gets pushed through a die to form the extrusion. This is then cut to either 5 metre or 6.1 metre lengths to finish the profile. Origin only use prime billets, meaning that our aluminium has not been produced through the re-melting of scraps. This results in better control of the chemical properties and thus achieving a higher quality finish. Each billet is certified and sourced from a number of leading suppliers, therefore allowing Origin full traceability back to primary billets.
