Origin Doors

Research shows that over 76% of domestic burglaries in England and Wales occurred as a result of an intruder gaining access to a home through a door or window. When you’re looking for new patio doors for your home, security will be one of your biggest concerns and, when installing large expanses of sliding glass doors, it’s even more important to choose the best quality doors to protect your home.

Traditionally, sliding doors, or any glass patio doors, have been seen as a vulnerable point for break-ins, however, modern sliding doors are much less vulnerable and offer a number of security features to keep your home safe.

Why is sliding door security important?

The security of your home is made up of various aspects that come together to form the best protection around your home; this is also true for a sliding glass door.

The security of your sliding doors includes the quality of the locks, the frame materials and the glazing you choose. Doors that are low quality or poorly fitted will not prevent an intruder from trying to break in. On the other hand, doors that look solid or difficult to break into are likely to deter any burglars who do not wish to get caught.

How can you ensure your new sliding door is as secure as possible?

When looking to install sliding doors for your home, there are a number of factors to consider when it comes to the security of your doors.

Material of the door

The material that the frame of your sliding glass door is made of will have a huge impact on security. Considering the materials available to you will help to understand the pros and cons of each option.

Wood and uPVC both offer a strong and durable door frame, however, both materials can be broken or bent if they are forced. Aluminium is a popular option for sliding doors and is one of the best on the market for sliding door frames. Aluminium can withstand huge amounts of pressure so, even if an intruder did try to force entry, they would struggle to get in.

At Origin, all of our Sliding Doors are manufactured using premium-grade aluminium. This means that we supply sliding doors that create the perfect balance between being visually breath-taking and structurally secure. The innate strength of the aluminium guarantees a physically secure sliding door for your home.

Glazing

As sliding doors are made up of large panes of glass, choosing the best glazing can not only have an impact on the security of your doors, but it can also affect the thermal efficiency of your home too. A single pane of glass is easy for an intruder to break and gain access to your home. However, double glazing is much harder to break and triple glazing is harder still to break into.

Origin Sliding Doors can be specified with either double or triple glazing, making it extremely tough to break as well as thermally efficient.

Multi-Point Door Lock

To secure your sliding doors further, you will need a strong lock that has been tested against break-ins. At Origin, we only use a multi-point door lock for all of our Sliding Doors because they help to make them as secure as possible and prevent lock snapping. Our locking system provides a minimum of six points of locking which makes it extremely secure and difficult to break into. In addition, on the OS-20, the only handle on the door is on the inside so that the lock cannot be picked from the outside by intruders.

Privacy

Beyond the quality of the sliding glass door you choose, there are also other aspects to consider too. Sliding doors feature large panes of glass which can help any would-be intruders to see straight into your home and see your belongings. Blinds or curtains can help to cover this at night when the lights are on or while you are away so intruders cannot see inside.

Origin Sliding Patio Doors

Our bespoke range of patio sliding doors provides a modern twist on the traditional patio door, and are perfect for any home. Here is a quick overview of our range and the features they offer.

Artisan Slider (OS-20)

Our Artisan Slider OS-20 features ultra-slim sightlines of just 20mm and is our sleekest design yet. This door system has been designed as a structurally bonded system made from premium grade aluminium. This means that the OS-20 can hold large expanses of glass while continuing to keep your home secure. If you want to maximise on natural light without compromising on security, the OS-20 is a great option.

Patio Sliding Door (OS-29/OS-44/OS-77)

Our Patio Sliding Door (OS-29/OS-44/OS-77) is available in three different options. The OS-29 boasts sightlines of 29mm, which makes it one of the slimmest sliding glass doors available in the UK. The OS-29 will offer more glass and natural light within your home.

For a modern finish, our OS-44 provides excellent sightlines of 44mm. However, if you’re looking for a more traditional look, the OS-77 offers sightlines of 77mm, which is a larger sightline for a more traditional style.

The glass within these doors is installed into the frame using gaskets. The main advantage of this method is that it creates a weathertight and secure seal with the option of replacing only the glass in the event of a breakage.

All of our Sliding Doors are available in over 150 RAL colours to provide you with the choice you need to match the style and décor of your home.

Security

For peace of mind, Origin’s Sliding Doors have been designed with your security in mind. Every one of our Sliding Doors features a multi-lock system that is exceptionally difficult to break.

Which type of patio door is most secure?

After deciding to replace your existing patio door or install a completely new exterior door, you will need to choose from the available types of door. You can choose from French Doors, Bifold Doors or Sliding Patio Doors. Each of these options will allow the natural light to beam through your home while offering better access to your garden. Understanding which patio door is most secure will help you to keep your home safe so we have compared the security of these three doors to help you.

French Doors

Many homeowners install French doors so they can enjoy having glass doors in their home with a more traditional look or because they only have a small space to fill. While the glass could be seen as a weakness, if they are double or triple glazed, this is not an issue.

Another area to be aware of when it comes to French doors is the hinges. If they are not properly secured, they could be easily unscrewed by a burglar. Therefore, it is not a concern as to whether French doors themselves are secure, but the quality of the installation. As long as your French doors are of a high quality and have been properly installed, the safety and security of your home will be maintained.

Origin’s range of French Doors feature our unique 8-point locking system which exceeds both Secured By Design and PAS 24:2016 standards as well as chamfered 20mm linear bolts to help withstand attacks from intruders who are looking to force entry.

Our locking cylinders are proven to protect against drilling, snapping, picking and bumping to keep your doors as secure as possible and protect your home.

Bi-fold Doors

Bi-fold doors have become incredibly popular over recent years due to their ability to completely transform an open up a space. Origin Bi-fold Doors boast strong glass panels and, just like our French Doors, exceed the latest security standards (including PAS 24:2016 and Secured By Design). Each door is supplied with an 8-point locking system and are equipped with heavy-duty zinc hinges and a cylinder lock proven to withstand lock snapping, drilling, bumping and picking.

Sliding Doors

Despite featuring large panes of glass, sliding patio doors are incredibly secure against forced entry. At Origin, our sliding doors can be installed with double glazed or triple glazed glass to make the glass harder to break. We also provide a multi-locking system rather than a simple latch that can be easily tampered with.
