Origin Doors

Despite offering a timeless design, Georgian windows that are manufactured today are usually able to specified with either double or triple-glazing. This allows for an advanced thermal performance to be achieved without compromising on design. Double or triple-glazing can also help reduce noise pollution, helping facilitate a comfortable indoor environment.

What makes a window Georgian?

Georgian windows were popularised in the late 18th Century and the early 19th Century, but given their elegance and charm, modern window designs still take inspiration from this era and aesthetic. Original windows of this time are characterised by small glazing panels separated by timber grids; often in a six-over-six grid or a nine-over-nine grid layout. Modern ‘Georgian’ windows are inspired by the original design and mimic their appearance, but given modern day manufacturing techniques, can offer superior performance – from security and thermal efficiency through to weatherproofing and improved operation.

Why Choose Modern Georgian Windows?

Modern Georgian windows can offer the same heritage charm as original period windows, but without some of the drawbacks that the originals may have carried. Modern windows, such as those manufactured by Origin, are vastly more durable, energy efficient and secure compared to old period windows. Explore more of the benefits below:

  1. Replicates the timeless and sought-after Georgian aesthetic
  2. Offers a higher level of security
  3. Can achieve excellent energy efficiency
  4. Can be fitted with double or triple-glazing
  5. Depending on the material, modern windows require less intensive maintenance

Can Georgian windows have double or triple-glazing?

Double or triple-glazed windows can significantly improve your home’s thermal performance, especially when replacing single-glazed windows.

Homeowners may worry that by replacing the original windows with energy efficient ones, they will be having to compromise on style and heritage appeal. However, many modern window options can include traditional features, allowing them to offer both style and functionality, and making them suitable for period properties or contemporary new-builds.

Energy Efficiency

Triple-glazing is 50-60% more energy efficient than double-glazing because it has an additional glazing layer with an inert gas in between the layers to trap heat. Double-glazing will still provide excellent energy efficiency compared to single glazed windows.

Advanced window systems, such as Origin’s, use polyamide thermal breaks and weatherproof seals to improve thermal performance. Plus, on the OW80, it can be upgraded with Aerogel – the most insulating material in the world – to help it achieve a U-Value as low as 0.8W/m2K.

Noise reduction

Due to the additional layers of glass and gas, triple-glazed windows can also help to soundproof your home. In some cases, they can reduce external noise by up to 35 dB. However, because the decibel scale is logarithmic, even a 10 dB reduction can make noise seem about half as loud to the human ear.

If you want to prioritise noise reduction for your home, office or garden room, you can discuss the option of having acoustic glass in your windows with your chosen installer.

Weight and ease of operation

Adding an extra layer of glazing increases the glass weight. Double-glazing is approximately twice as heavy, whilst triple-glazing is three times as heavy as a single pane of glass. While high quality windows such as those manufactured by Origin should be easy to operate, the larger your Casement Window is, the heavier the glass will be. If you are planning on having large opening sashes or a top hung casement, you may want to opt for double-glazing.

Affordability

Triple-glazing costs on average . However, if an average household loses 18% of heat via windows, the cost savings in terms of energy efficiency can be around 10% (if it reduces heat transfer by up to 50%). These savings will depend on how many windows you have, how well insulated the rest of your home is and how energy efficient your original windows were.

Triple-glazing can be worth the additional cost if you prioritise keeping your energy bills and carbon footprint to a minimum or if reducing noise is a must.

Should you choose double or triple-glazed Georgian Windows?

Both double and triple-glazed modern Georgian windows are possible and there’s no visual difference between the two. Therefore, the decision should come down to whether you prioritise maximum energy efficiency or if you would be satisfied with the level that double-glazing provides. If you currently have single glazed timber Georgian windows, either option will drastically improve energy efficiency and insulation.

Aluminium is another possibility which is highly durable and offers a refined look.

Are double or triple-glazed Georgian windows suitable for listed homes?

Listed buildings should be updated in keeping with the original architecture or the surrounding area, so Georgian-style windows, both triple and double-glazed, are often suitable for these types of properties. Speak with your local council for more information.

Are Georgian windows more expensive?

Georgian Windows come with more profile because of the grid pattern, so can cost slightly more than full uninterrupted glazed windows. However, their timeless beauty can add long-term value and kerb appeal.
