We answer common queries on choosing aluminium bifold doors
What are bespoke bifold doors, and what are the benefits of choosing them?
Bespoke bifold doors are custom-made folding doors that are designed to fit specific measurements and preferences. Unlike standard doors, they can be tailored in terms of size, material, colour, accessories, security and finish to meet the unique requirements of a property.
Created bespoke to ensure you can make the most of your space, Origin Bifold Doors range from one to twelve door sets. Individual doors can be manufactured as narrow as 400mm, as wide as 1,200mm and as tall as 3,025mm. You can choose how they open and close – whether they fold in or out, and how they slide – to meet your exact needs. Our huge range of colour and finish options ensures that there is a style to suit your home, with 150 RAL colours to choose from.
Why choose aluminium bifold doors?
At Origin, the aluminium we use for our doors is extruded from the world leaders in aluminium supply. We choose aluminium because of the material’s strength, enabling it to be manufactured into doors with very slim frames, giving you the ultimate view of your garden and allowing the maximum amount of light into your home. The aluminium is extruded into bar lengths of 5m and 6m which will eventually become the frames of your doors.
While uPVC bifold doors or wooden bifold doors can also sometimes be custom-made, most aluminium bifolds are made-to-measure due to the material’s versatility. This means your Origin Bifold Door will be manufactured to your exact specifications, ensuring it fits your specific opening and additional requirements. The benefit of having custom-made bifold doors is that they can fit any aperture, even if it is not conventionally shaped. High-quality manufacturers of aluminium bifold doors, such as Origin, are very flexible in the options they can offer.

Origin’s manufacturing process
Powder coating
In order to give the doors their flawless finish, the aluminium is covered with the highest-grade powder coating available, applied using an electrostatic process after a special pre-treatment and cured at 200°C. The powder coat finish is extremely hard-wearing and is resistant to scratches and colour fading, and this is just one of the reasons why Origin’s doors are guaranteed to look good for at least 20-years.
Bespoke manufacturing
Each order for bifold doors is completely bespoke and is made to the customer’s individual specifications in our factory in High Wycombe. The first step in the process is to cut the bar lengths to the exact length required for the doors, and once cut, they are passed to the CNC machine team. In this part of the process, the CNC operators choose the order number specific to the customer’s specification for the doors so the machine can create the holes in the metal required to insert the doors’ fittings and fixtures.
Once the CNC stage is complete, the doors are then mechanically crimped, which means the top, bottom and sides of the doors are fitted together to create the frame. The doors then pass through each workstation where a team member performs a task such as fitting rivnuts, hinges, locks and gaskets to the door. The precision engineering is all done by hand by our team of 31 experts.
Quality control
As each stage of the manufacturing process is done by hand, quality control checks are in place at every point in production as our team manually check each other’s work as the doors reach each work station. Once the doors are complete, they are then checked again for everything from scratches on the paintwork, to the colour of the handles and hinges to ensure they are of the highest quality when they reach you.
Delivery
Once the doors are finished, we deliver them on our own vehicles to our trade partners. This way, we stay in complete control of the delivery process and ensure the doors arrive safety and on time. The glazing is then fitted into the doors by our trusted trade partners.

The main differences between a high-quality and low-quality bifold doors are:

- With high-quality doors, every component (including handles and hinges) ensures the doors are more secure and last for much longer
- Low-quality doors tend to be more difficult to operate due to their poorer‑quality components and substandard specification
- High-quality doors usually come with a longer manufacturer’s guarantee

Frequently asked questions
What are bespoke bifold doors?
Bespoke bifold doors are custom-made folding doors that are designed to fit specific measurements and preferences. Unlike standard doors, they can be tailored in terms of size, material, colour, and finish to meet the unique requirements of a building or homeowner.
What materials are used for bespoke bifold doors?
The most common materials used for bespoke bifold doors include aluminium, wood, and uPVC. Aluminium is popular for its durability and modern appearance. Wood offers a classic and warm aesthetic but requires more maintenance. uPVC is cost-effective and provides good insulation but might not offer the same strength or aesthetics as the other materials.
How do bifold doors work?
Bifold doors consist of multiple panels that fold against each other and are typically supported by a track system at the top or bottom. This allows them to smoothly slide and fold away, creating a large opening that integrates indoor and outdoor spaces.
Are bespoke bifold doors energy efficient?
Yes - with the right materials and installation, bespoke bifold doors can be highly energy efficient. Features like double or triple glazing, thermal breaks in aluminium frames, and proper seals can help reduce heat loss and improve insulation.
Can bespoke bifold doors be secured?
Yes, modern bespoke bifold doors come with various security features, including multi-point locking systems, internally beaded frames, and high-security hinges. These features make them as secure as any conventional door, provided they are properly installed and maintained.
