Building an extension with sliding doors

If you’re building an extension on your home, you may be thinking about installing sliding doors. There are a number of factors to consider to decide on whether sliding doors are the best type of door for your extension.

Sliding doors may be suitable for your extension for the following reasons:

  • You want to save space –French and bi-fold doors require space either inside or outside your home to open but sliding doors do not require any extra space.
  • You want ultra-slim sightlines – sliding doors offer slim frames and sightlines of as little as 20mm which helps provide an almost uninterrupted view.
  • You want large glass panels – when compared to other types of patio door, sliding doors offer the most prominent glass area with no interruptions.
  • You want a modern style – a combination of the above factors provides a clean and modern aesthetic for your home; perfect if you’re extending or upgrading your home.
  • You want excellent views when the doors are closed – whilst bi-fold doors provide excellent views when fully opened, the multiple frames can interrupt the view when they’re closed. So, if you’re likely to have the doors closed most of the time, sliding doors are the least intrusive option.

Sliding doors provide the perfect way to make the most of the space in your extension. They don’t hinge inwards or outwards, making them the perfect option if you want to make the most of the space you have available. They provide great flexibility within a constricted floor plan.

Sliding doors are also available in a range of configurations and options so there is something to suit every home and extension. You can find out more about the options available to you by speaking to your local installer.

Before installing sliding doors in your kitchen, there are a number of factors to consider, including:

  • Proximity of the entryway to kitchen units or appliances

Having a conservatory is the perfect way to connect your home to the outside and sliding doors helps to enhance this connection.

As with any location you choose within in your home you want to have sliding doors installed, factors to consider when installing them in your conservatory include the material, colour, track and glazing used in your doors.
