Understanding sliding door panel size restrictions
All Origin Sliding Door systems allow for two, three, four and six-panel configurations. However, each of the sliding door systems will offer different minimum and maximum sized panels.
Choosing your own Origin Sliding Door is simple. Our flexible range of configurations means no matter whether you're creating the extension of your dreams, moving into a new build, or refreshing the patio of a townhouse, you'll be able to find the perfect combination of panels.
Once you know your opening size, it's easy to find out the possible panel options. We produce a handy table to help you roughly understand the amount of doors that could be specified according to the size of the aperture. Our patio door glazing gives you a wide range of different configurations and options:
Opening size | Panel options |
---|---|
1.4 metres to 4.2 metres | Two panels |
2.2 metres to 6.2 metres | Three panels |
3 metres to 8.6 metres | Four panels |
4.6 metres to 13.2 metres | Six panels |

However, you can choose how many doors you want to go into the aperture (dependent on their minimum and maximum individual panel sizes sliding door). So, for example, if you have an aperture of 3 metres, you could choose to have a two, three or four panelled slider – it is completely down to you.
Origin Sliding Doors: Options of panel sizes
Our Origin Artisan Slider features ultra-slim sightlines of just 20mm. It is made from premium grade aluminium and can accommodate panel sizes of up to 2200mm wide and 3000mm tall (or up to 6sqm overall in panel size). This combination means less door frame and more natural light is achieved. It provides a truly breathtaking spectacle. The minimum individual panel size for the Origin Artisan Slider is 550mm wide and 1600mm tall.
The Origin Patio Slider is a modern take on the traditional patio door. It provides the perfect fit for every type of home, as it is made completely bespoke, with two sightline options available – 44mm or 77mm. The Origin Patio Slider can accommodate a maximum individual panel size of 2000mm wide and 2520mm tall, or a minimum size of 710mm wide and 1925mm high per door.
The OS-44 - the slimmer of the two doors - has sightlines of just 44mm. This maximises the glass and the level of natural light which floods in. The OS-77 - with marginally larger sightlines of 77mm - creates an elegant and more traditional style of patio system.
You can choose to have some doors sliding or fixed, or a combination of both. The configuration can be decided by the layout of your space. For example, if it's easier to enter your garden from one particular side, or if there’s something in the way on one side, then the doors can be configured to suit. You should also bear in mind that some configurations will come with an interlocker which will have an additional profile if the doors meet and lock in the middle.
Should I choose a small or large panel size?
The panel size you choose depends on the style and view you want, as well as the sliding door system chosen and the configuration you would like. If you choose panel sizes that are the maximum height and width, your view will be maximised, and there will also be fewer doors to open. However, you may prefer to have more doors to make the individual panels a little bit lighter to operate. Despite this, our running gear ensures that whatever option you go for, the operation will be flawless.

FAQs
How many panels do you need for a sliding glass door?
Origin Sliding Doors allow for two, three, four and six-panel configurations.
What should I look for when buying a sliding patio door?
The main aspects to consider when choosing a sliding patio door include the dimensions of the sightline, the colour, the security options, the material, and the cost.
How do you measure a sliding glass door to replace it?
Your chosen Origin installer will do this for you as they will be undertaking and guaranteeing the install. They will usually start at the inside of the side jamb, extending the tape measure to the centre stile at the opposite end to measure the width. To determine the height, they will measure from the top track to the centre of the bottom door sill. If you do this, this will give you a rough idea of the size you're working towards - however; your chosen installer will do this professionally for you, should you decide to go ahead.
Can sliding doors match other windows and doors?
You can choose sliding patio doors to match your existing windows and doors, as we have such a huge array of colour options, but they don't necessarily have to. They can also complement each other to look aesthetically pleasing.
How does a three-panel sliding door work?
You can either have all doors moving, or you can choose to have one panel fixed. If you went for the latter option, the fixed panel could be placed on the right (so your doors would lock and open from the left) or on the left (so your doors would open from the right). If you went for the fixed door option with a three-panel sliding door configuration, you will get roughly an opening of 66%, give or take the sightline and door sizes when the sliding panes are fully open.
Can glass be replaced in patio doors?
If your door is a dry glazed system, panes of glass can be replaced. If it is a wet glazed system, this means that the glass is structurally bonded to the frames, and so you would have to replace the whole panel. Origin do not provide glass, so you’d need to speak to an installer of your choice to look at this.
Should I choose double or triple glazing?
The lower the U-Value figure, the better insulating the door is. On the OS-44 and OS-77, double glazing can offer a U-Value of 1.6, while triple glazing can be as low as 1.3, which can reduce the heat loss through the glazing. The OS-20 can offer a U-Value of 1.4. At the end of the day, it is down to personal choice.
