Whether you are redesigning your home, or just looking to change a few things, doors are a crucial component in your home's layout. Sliding doors offer a timeless and stylish addition to any property, providing a seamless transition between the indoors and outdoors while maximising the amount of natural light that comes into the home.
Origin Sliding Doors are offered in three sightline options: 29mm, 44mm and 77mm. The OS29+ features ultra-slim sightlines of just 29mm and allow for large glass panels to be supported by the strong aluminium frames and let in stunning amounts of natural light.
The OS44 and OS77 offer a different yet equally stylish look that is closer to the more traditional style of patio door systems. The OS44, being the slimmer of the two at 44mm, maximises the amount of natural light, while the OS77 offers bolder borders for a classic, Bauhaus-effect finish. The focus of this article, however, is not on the frames or panes of the doors, which often attract the most attention, but rather the more silent yet equally as important part of the door: the handles.
The handle is the crux of any sliding door, and is often what ties the overall impression of the door together. It is important that you know what type of handle to go for when choosing your sliding doors, including how well it will serve your aesthetic and functional requirements. In this guide:
OS29+ handle options
As with any important interior design decision, we need to start by reviewing our options.
The OS29+ comes with three handle options:
- Patio D-Handle - available in Anthracite, Black, Stainless Steel and White
- 260mm All-In-One Stainless Steel, featuring a lock and thumbturn
- 280mm All-In-One Signature Knurled, featuring a lock and thumbturn and available in six stunning colourways - Antique Brass, Brushed Black, Brushed Bronze, Rose Gold, Satin Brass and Satin Stainless
OS44 and OS77 handle options
Unlike OS29+, both the OS44 and OS77 come with two handle types.
The options available are:
- Patio D-Handle - available in Anthracite, Black, Stainless Steel and White
- 300mm All-In-One Stainless Steel, featuring a lock and thumbturn
- 500mm Offset Bar Handle, featuring a separate escutcheon and locking mechanism
The 300mm option provides a smaller and more modern look with a fluid functionality, due to the all-in-one locking system and thumb-turn. Meanwhile, the 500mm option is a contrasting, undeniably bold alternative that offers a more traditional look with a classic functionality presented by the separate locking system.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best lock for a sliding door?
In short, a multi-point locking system such as those provided by Origin is always the best choice for a secure locking system. Please refer to our sliding door lock options guide for more details.
How can you make your sliding glass door more secure?
One way to further secure a sliding glass door is through the installation of an extra sliding door lock. These locks are installed on the top of the door and work in addition to the normal lock to provide extra security. Origin do not provide this, so your local installer would need to source this for you. You could also look at getting laminated or reinforced glass. Again, your installer would be able to talk through this with you.
