With UK lockdown causing us to spend more time indoors than ever before, we noticed a significant rise in the number of people searching for and posting pictures of their homes online. At Origin, we’re always interested to find out more about the latest interior trends, so decided to explore this further.
Our research found that there has been a huge uplift in the number of people sharing photos of all rooms in the house, from Zoom cocktails in the dining room to DIY home offices in the bedroom and cinema nights in the living room.
The Living Room
Interestingly, the living room was by far the most frequently Instagrammed room, with more people sharing images of this ‘hub of the home’ than any other. In fact, 41 percent of all images uploaded of UK interiors in 2020 were of living rooms. Our study revealed a number of innovative new uses for the room during the pandemic, with the regular function of the lounge increasing three-fold on average. Yoga studios, boardrooms and wine bars were just some of the reinventions posted online.
Living rooms lend themselves perfectly to the ideal Instagram shot, as they are increasingly the lightest and airiest rooms in the house, boasting more space and plenty of natural light.
The Bedroom
The master bedroom took second place, as the #viewfrommybed hashtag was reclaimed for the COVID-19 era, with many Instagram users taking the opportunity to showcase their stylish bedrooms at home, as opposed to exotic hotel suites.
Kitchen Diners
Dining rooms came in at third place, closely followed by kitchens, reflecting the trend for experimenting with new foods and drinks during lockdown. 2020 also saw the rise of the ‘dining table desk’ as a result of many people working from home.
Bathrooms
With wellness and self-care becoming an increasing priority, bathrooms also appeared among the top 10, as Instagram users transformed the humble washroom into at-home spas and action-packed water parks for children.
Conclusion
With many of us spending more time at home throughout 2020 than ever before, our houses have had to perform multiple functions and cater for every aspect of our lives. This, coupled with the increased importance of online social activity whilst in-person connections are on hold, has meant that more and more of us are taking to Instagram to share our innovative, stylish and unusual ideas for our homes.
We know how important a connection to the great outdoors is, so it came as no surprise to us that the rooms that were posted the most often were those that tend to offer the most natural light. Not only are these rooms photogenic, but they also do wonders for our physical and mental wellbeing, which has become more important than ever during a challenging year.
