After living in his home for over 20 years with his family, James Brackon decided it was time to build an extension as he wanted to create a bigger kitchen and make the garden more accessible. Before the extension, it could only be accessed through a side entrance.

James is a company director in the construction industry, so knew exactly what he was after. He first came across the Origin Bi-folding Door at the Homebuilding and Renovating Show at ExCel London, where he tried every bi-folding door at the show, looking for the perfect system.

"Origin's doors had the best feel, and I liked the high-quality aluminium construction and smooth running action," said James. "Security is important to me too, and I was impressed with the security features of Origin's doors. Plus, there was also a large range to choose from."

James made arrangements to meet one of Origin's trade agents on-site, as building work for the extension was already underway. He selected a two-door and five-door set of bi-fold doors, each fitted with Origin’s eight-point locking system that complies with PAS 23/24 security standards, one of James's security requirements.

Another of James's concerns when searching for doors for his extension was having to compromise on colour as he ideally wanted a lighter colour to match his interior, but a darker colour on the exterior, to match his existing second-story windows. Origin's dual colour option meant he didn't have to compromise and could opt for white for the interior, and mahogany (this colour has been discontinued) for the exterior of the doors.

More Light and More Space

The extension was a success, and has increased the value of the property. There is far more space than before, but one of the biggest improvements is the amount of natural light that now comes into the living space. The outside patio area and the inside dining and living areas are also now more connected, while the colour scheme works perfectly with the rest of the property.

James said: "It has really blurred the line between outside and inside, which is exactly what we wanted. The house feels much bigger now."

James is looking forward to having more family events at his home, as access to the garden has been greatly improved because it is now one free-flowing space.

"I love having family and friends over for barbecues, birthday parties, and other events," said James. "Before, however, the people outside were cut off from anyone inside. Now we just open the bi-fold doors and it is one big, open space. That was something we could never do before and has completely changed the way the house is used. Now, those inside still feel part of what is going on outside and visa-versa.”

A certain type of event that James may not have foreseen hosting as a result of his extension are wedding receptions…

"One of my daughter's friends has actually asked if she could have her wedding reception here!"
