Couple Return to Home After 44 Years with Origin Bi-Folding Doors
Beth and Jason Cole decided to build an extension when they moved into their "new" home in 2014, as it was a house that was close to their hearts. In fact, they first bought the home in 1970, the year it was built and the year the couple were married.
After spending the first eight years of married life together in the house, they sold it to run a B&B, although the house stayed close to the couple as Jason's aunt was the buyer. Later, Beth and Jason's son would even own the property, buying it from the aunt!
Beth and Jason, however, spent 27 years running the B&B before buying their original marital home back. That was in 2012, but they didn’t move in immediately, opting to rent it for a couple of years until Jason retired.
It was the home where the couple started married life and, 44 years later, it would also be the home where they would spend their retirement.
Modernising and Extending
Before settling in, however, they wanted to modernise and extend the back of the house. It is located in Bradworthy, about 10 miles from the coast, and has beautiful views over rolling countryside that Beth and Jason wanted to make the most of while also creating more space for the interior.
Their niece and her husband are both architects, so Beth and Jason turned to them to draw up some plans, going through a number of stages before deciding how best to proceed, with the final plans including bi-folding doors.
"Bi-folding doors fitted perfectly with what we wanted to achieve" said Beth. "I love the views we have, and bi-folding doors allow Jason and I to enjoy them, whatever the weather."
Beth and Jason decided aluminium bi-folding doors were the best option after looking at a number of the alternatives, including timber and uPVC. The coupled preferred the sturdier feel of aluminium, attractive appearance, and the fact that aluminium would stand the test of time as it doesn't warp in the same way that timber and uPVC can.
Beth said: "We wanted something that would last and would require no maintenance. We both fell in love with Origin’s doors. They had the grey colour that we wanted to modernise the house, and the doors have a feeling of real quality. They were just what we were looking for."
To complement the bi-folds, the Cole’s also opted to install fixed Origin Windows next to them with an Origin Gable above. All of the products that the couple opted for were installed by Prime Windows Devon. The fixed frames allow the natural light to enter all corners of the kitchen-lounge area whilst the mullions of the gable match perfectly with the sightlines of the bi-folds, giving a seamless look to the back of the house.
Beth and Jason selected their Origin installation partner Prime and then the team helped them to choose their products and work began on the extension before they went travelling through Vietnam and Cambodia in February 2015. While they were away, their doors and windows were installed by Prime and when they came back, their home was transformed. The couple could not be happier with the product and service that they received from the team at Prime.
"The wonderful scenery of the fields outside is now much more a part of the inside of the home," said Beth. "It makes the times I have with friends over afternoon tea or spontaneous catch ups even more enjoyable.”
