Extending the Family Home

When the Taylor’s decided to install bi-fold doors into their home in Rickmansworth, they wanted the best, which is why they turned to Origin, and they were particularly impressed that Origin doors are entirely manufactured in the UK.

Jill Taylor visited Origin’s factory and showroom in High Wycombe to see how the doors were made and to see the doors in action. The Taylor’s have a holiday home in Spain and wanted a room in their UK home that reminded them of being on holiday. They chose Origin to help them recreate this feeling by designing bi-fold doors for their 7.5m by 3.6m extension.

Ultimate in Open Plan Living

The couple specified a five door set-up, where all of the doors fold and slide in the same direction and a separate three door set-up, which would create as much open space as possible. The couple included classic style aspects in the room’s redesign including crema marfil marble tiles, cream stone walls and inward opening windows, to help reflect the feel of their home in Spain.

Origin’s Bi-folding doors are thermally efficiency and the Taylor’s specified them with feature tinted and self-cleaning smart glass, making them easy to look after. As the doors are made from high grade aluminium, the frames are manufactured to be very narrow, which means the doors provide the maximum view of the garden.

Bespoke Finish

There are multiple finishes and RAL colours available for the doors and the Taylor’s chose a realistic wood grain effect in Walnut (this colour has been discontinued) to fit with the classic design of the house and to tie in with the look of the existing window frames. The extension measures 264sq ft in total and the redesign has meant the Taylor’s can now enjoy the garden room they always wanted.

Jill comments, “The whole structure of the garden room is perfect, the living area has an open plan feel so we can enjoy the garden. It also serves as an ideal entertaining space. We love the infinity of light that seems to pour in throughout the day – it reminds us of our holiday home in Spain.”

Jill found that working with Origin was extremely straightforward. She explains, “We handed everything over to the Origin team who recommended the different builders and installers to complete the extension we wanted. The extension has changed the way we view and use the house. It was the change we needed to fall in love with our home all over again – we certainly won’t be moving any time soon.”

A Room for the Whole Family to Enjoy

The Taylor’s regularly have big family holidays in Spain and the couple wanted to bring that feeling of relaxation and hospitality to their Rickmansworth home. The new bi-fold extension has enabled them to do just that, by creating a unique and spacious living area for the whole family to enjoy. “One of the super things about Origin doors is that they are ‘finger safe’, my daughter has recently had a baby, and features like 'finger safe' gaskets are so important”, adds Jill.

The Taylor's home certainly has the 'wow' factor as the light streams through the 4185 x 2070mm five set and 2525 x 2080mm three bi-fold set, naturally drawing the eye to their beautiful open-plan garden room.
