Choosing the right manufacturer for renovation

Through researching online and attending the Homebuilding & Renovating Show, James and Laura found out more about Origin and decided that the quality and range of configurations available would completely meet their needs. They then used the Origin website to source their local Origin Premium Partner, Mainstream Windows, and started the process to make their dreams for their home come true. Planning permission came within a month and work got started straight away.

Combining bi-folds and gables for a wall of light

The aesthetics, functionality and slim sightlines of the Origin bi-fold door held the biggest initial attraction for James and Laura. Once they learned more about the innate strength of aluminium and the levels of craftsmanship, security and thermal efficiency endorsed through Origin’s accreditations, they were so impressed that they added a gable window on top. From floor to ceiling, the wall of light delivered by this combination stands at just over four metres high.

Opening up a bespoke space

Like every product in the Origin Home range, all windows are made in-house, and James and Laura were able to have their gable window custom made to their home’s sizes and needs. As the Origin bi-fold door comes in a range of configurations, they were able to tailor their door, and chose the 3+3 configuration to give options on how they would like to open up their kitchen – either through an access door and French doors, or with three doors open. This level of flexibility gives James and Laura easy access to ensure that they can relax and enjoy their garden, rather than spending time worrying about getting in and out of the house.

While they aimed to give a modern twist to their older home, they didn’t want the door colours to match or contrast with the interior, so went for anthracite grey (7016M), as a neutral option.

The high levels of thermal efficiency offered by both the bi-fold doors and gable window – combined with a brand new well-insulated extension – meant that double glazing (rather than triple) would be more than sufficient, with the level of sunlight coming through, to keep the home at just the right temperature.

Enjoying a dream kitchen

With so much light and space, high ceilings and a lovely garden view, James and Laura now have their dream kitchen, where they can enjoy wonderful sunsets over their lovely garden.

When asked how they feel about the finished project, it’s fair to say the kitchen is now the place to be: “With a few rooms around the house, it is a very cosy open plan kitchen and living room, and we use it for reading listening to music, watching tv and entertaining.” Family and friends have also been very impressed with the transformation the doors and windows have brought to the home, and the children and grandchildren, who visit frequently, especially love the easy access of the bi-folds leading into the garden.
