Blending Contemporary with Traditional
Originally from Lancashire, Michael Baker worked as a pilot so naturally moved around a lot during his career. Now retired, he has spent the last four years living in his property in Wiltshire with his wife. Having initially lived elsewhere and commuting to and from work, they loved the local area where they worked and so the decision to move permanently was natural.
At the time of purchase, Michael’s house had timber doors and windows, as part of the original site. Before moving in, he renovated it to update the look and feel and bring a sense of practical modernisation that would improve his life there. That said, he wanted to retain the traditional elements that gave the property its charm and character.
Michael and his wife Jane wanted the kitchen to be particularly modern. The search for the right products for their renovation was extensive, having considered no fewer than 18 different traders, they chose to fit Origin Bi-folding Doors and Windows as well as other windows for the rest of the house which would help retain the property’s traditional look whilst also adding an element of modernism.
"I wouldn’t say I definitely wanted Origin Bi-fold Doors as I had not considered them but having visited Crystal Clear (one of Origin’s Accredited Partners), Origin Bi-folds were recommended and I liked their quality, the smooth operation and the weight. The handles and fittings looked and felt like a good quality product." Michael explained.
Initially, they wanted to replace the doors in the kitchen with like for like French doors but ended up opting for a 3-door set of bi-folds in pebble grey (7032M) specifically to open up the kitchen, and complemented by Origin windows which offered a contemporary feel. The bifolds provide some great views of the surroundings. French doors were installed in the living room, and all windows across the house were replaced.
"People love the bifolds! They always say great things about them, I think it's because they've opened up the space, it's light and airy, everyone likes the views but the doors really make everything work together." Michael continued.
The bifolds have a lead door which is used as an entrance/exit to the kitchen. On warm, dry days, they can be opened fully to experience the full extent of attractive countryside views, and bring extra light into the house.
"We'd definitely use Origin again - in fact, we've already recommended them to a friend. We love the high product quality, and we now know the after sales is superb too. We had some niggling issues with the doors when they were first installed but this was quickly rectified. We can relax knowing any issues will be resolved. That in itself is a huge selling point."
